Background
Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) was formed in
the fall of 1993 as a California corporation to combat the current bureaucracy
that perpetuates the state's costly avalanche of lawsuits. This grassroots
organization was formed in response to a civil justice system that encourages
both people to sue and lawyers to take advantage of victims. Our leadership
is a group of small business and professional people from the greater
Orange County area who are all unitedin our passion for meaningful reform
of an out-of-control civil litigation system. We believe that tort reform
has not been adequately addressed by our lawmakers because of the influence
of special interest groups on the legislative process. We feel the public
must become engaged in the debate over legal reform before California
cansolve its lawsuit crisis.
Mission Statement
CALA's mission is to educate the public about the impact of lawsuit
abuse on consumers and California's economy, thereby creating a climate
for change.
Our Goals
Our goal is to bring balance, fairness, responsibility and restraint
to our court system. We focus on the adverse effect of frivolous lawsuits
as a consumer issue. By raising the profile of lawsuit abuse, we believe
there will be a change in public understanding, attitude and behavior.
Clearly the system needs correction, and correction begins with education. To
achieve our goals, we will create a climate for change by:
Increasing public awareness of the true consequences
of lawsuit abuse -- destroyed businesses, lost jobs and higher prices
for consumers;
Stimulating debate on the issue; and,
Serving as a watchdog group over those interests
that use the system to seek undeserved financial gain at the expense
of consumers.
Our Message
Our message is simple -- the California court system is out-of-control.
It both invites and rewards abuse. These abuses threaten the very balance
the court system was designed to achieve and prevents legitimate victims
from being fairly compensated in a timely manner. When people abuse
the system, we all pay and we all lose. As such, we all have a personal
responsibility to fix the problem; to prevent the abuse while protecting
one's access to the courts.CALA's desire is to see justice restored
where both parties get even handed treatment, no more and no less.
Advancing the Message
To increase public awareness and advance our stop lawsuit abuse
message, we will:
Educate the public through paid media -- billboards, television,
radio, and print ads and direct mail;
Provide supporters with information and ammunition
for the fight through newsletters, forums and a speakers bureau; and
Focus on those perpetuating lawsuit abuse and those
trying to reform the system.
